National School Counseling Week 2/3 - 2/7

MONDAY 2/3: This week is National School Counseling week. Each day the announcements will feature a fun fact about what a counselor does and issue a challenge for you to complete. Today’s theme is kindness! Your challenge is to initiate a conversation and talk to someone new or if you have never met your counselor introduce yourself to them in the hallway!

TUESDAY 2/4: Today’s theme for National School Counseling Week is College & Career! School counselors can help students to develop their long term plans for what career they want to pursue after high school or where they will go to college. The average person will spend 90,000 hours at work over a lifetime. School counselors help you explore what type of career you want to go in and help you find your calling. Researchers have found that workers who feel a higher calling to their jobs are among the most content

WEDNESDAY 2/5: Today’s theme for National School Counseling Week is Mental Health! School counselors bring awareness to mental health and assist in getting people the help they need to manage their mental health. Our goal is to provide support to students in this area, equipping them with coping skills to deal with academic and life challenges and achieve an overall sense of wellness. Your challenge today is to take a negative thought and replace it with a positive thought to practice positive self-talk.

THURSDAY 2/6: Today’s theme for National School Counseling Week is Mindfulness! School counselors can help you manage stress and anxiety by teaching you strategies for relieving stress and becoming more mindful. Mindfulness practices can help us to increase our ability to regulate emotions, decrease stress, anxiety and depression— it can also help us to focus our attention. Your challenge for today is to practice a deep breathing exercise. Google your own or try 4 Square Breathing: breathe in for 4 seconds, hold for 4 seconds, slowly exhale for 4 seconds and rest for 4 seconds.

FRIDAY 2/7: Today’s theme for National School Counseling Week is resiliency. School counselors can help you work through difficulties and failures in order to build resilience, a growth mindset and achieve your goals. According to research, you become 42% more likely to achieve your goals and dreams, simply by writing them down on a regular basis. Your challenge for today is to choose a goal you would like to achieve this semester and write it down somewhere you will see it everyday!
